In this tutorial we are going to install WAS on Ubuntu. The version of WAS which we are going to install is 8.5 Network Deployment edition and we are using 64 bit OS. If you are unsure about your system architecture check How to find Operating System bit in Linux.

WebSphere Application Server (WAS) is a software product from IBM that performs the role of a web application server. More specifically, it is a software framework and middleware that hosts Java based web applications.

Before you start you must have installed IBM Installation Manager on the host system. In case of guidance, you can follow How to Install IBM Installation Manager on Ubuntu tutorial.

As per the IBM’s documents of supported Linux distributions, Ubuntu is not supported for IBM products. For evaluation purpose you can install it on Ubuntu, but it is not recommended for production environment. Also you can see it as a reference document to install on another supported Linux distributions.

Following is the summary steps of How to Install WAS on Ubuntu

  1. Downloading binaries from IBM Website
  2. Extract binaries to a temporary location
  3. Install WAS on Ubuntu using IBM Installation Manager
  4. Verify the installed version

This tutorial use two variables to define various installation paths. They are as follows

  • <was_root>: /app/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer
  • <profile_root>: /app/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/profiles

Followings are the WAS 8.5 Network Deployment part numbers we need to download.
CI6Y3ML
CI6Y4ML
CI6Y5ML

All the downloads will reside in /home/wasadmin/Downloads folder.

Steps of How to Install WAS on Ubuntu are as follows

  1. Downloading binaries
    1. Login as a Non Administrator user wasadmin as we are going to install WAS using Non Administrator user.
      Go to IBM Passport Advantage website by clicking following link

      Click on Customer sign in button.

    2. Post entering your IBM ID and Password, click on Sign in button.

    3. Click on Download software link which is there under Find it fast tag. You will find it on the left hand side of the webpage.

    4. In the Search your entitled software window click on Part number radio button Enter part number in the search field and click on hover glass icon. Here we are specifying part number CI6Y3ML.

    5. Click on the Download button to start the download.

    6. In the opened pop up select HTTP radio button.
      Accept terms by clicking I agree to the terms and conditions radio button and click Download Now to proceed further.

    7. Follow the same process for part numbers CI6Y4ML, CI6Y5ML. We will be downloading all the files are in /home/wasadmin/Downloads folder.
  2. Extracting binaries
    1. Login as a Non Admin user i.e. wasadmin.
      Make sure that all the files are downloaded in /home/wasadmin/Downloads folder

    2. Create a folder WAS under /home/wasadmin/Downloads folder using following command
      mkdir ~/Downloads/WAS

    3. Go to the folder where we have downloaded binaries
      cd ~/Downloads

    4. Extract all the binaries using following commands
      unzip WAS_ND_V8.5_1_OF_3.zip -d WAS

      unzip WAS_ND_V8.5_2_OF_3.zip -d WAS

      unzip WAS_ND_V8.5_3_OF_3.zip -d WAS

  3. Install WAS on Ubuntu
    1. Go to the IBM Installation Manager installation location. In our case installation location is /app/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse
      cd /app/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse

    2. Start IBM Installation Manager by running following command to install WAS
      ./IBMIM

    3. The IBM Installation Manager screen displays.

    4. The Install Packages wizard takes you through the installation process for one or more packages. To locate the packages, you must configure the repository.
      Click File > Preferences.

    5. Select Repositories and click Add repository

    6. Browse to /home/wasadmin/Downloads/WAS/repository.config and click Open.

    7. Click on OK button to close the Preferences window.

    8. Click the Install icon from the Installation Manager to install WAS

    9. Installation Manager lists all the packages that it finds in the configured repositories. In this case, it searched the repository and found the following packages. Select IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment.

    10. As Ubuntu is not certified OS to install WAS, you may see the following warning. Click Next to proceed further.

    11. The Licenses panel opens. You can read the license agreements for any of the packages. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.

    12. On Install Packages, select location for the shared resources directory, enter an appropriate location for IMShared and click Next button. These files will be used by all IBM products installed through the Installation Manager. We will be specifying /app/IBM/IMShared as our path.

    13. In the Installation Directory field, enter an appropriate location to install WAS 8.5 software and click Next button. It does not have to be the same location as the shared location. In our case Installation Directory is /app/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer

    14. On Install Packages, translations, select your desired language and click Next button to proceed further.

    15. The Features panel lists more features for installation. Note the default selections and click Next.

    16. On the Summary panel, confirm your previous choices. Verify your information with the following figure. If necessary, you can click Back to modify any choices.

    17. On Install Packages, select radio button None and click on Finish to close the installation dialogue box.

    18. Close the Installation Manager by clicking on close button.

  4. Verify the installed version
    1. To verify the installation go to /app/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/bin directory
      cd /app/IBM/WebSphere/AppServer/bin

    2. Run following command to find out the installed version.
      ./versionInfo.sh

    3. Following screen confirms that we have successfully installed IBM WebSphere Application Server 8.5 on Ubuntu 15.04
