This is the small tutorial about Installing IBM Installation Manager on Ubuntu 15.04.

As per the IBM’s documents of supported Linux distributions, Ubuntu is not supported for IBM products. For evaluation purpose you can install it on Ubuntu, but it is not recommended for production environment. Also you can see it as a reference document to install on another supported Linux distributions.

Following is the summary of what we are going to do in this tutorial.

  1. What is IBM Installation Manager?
  2. Need of IBM Installation Manager?
  3. Prerequisite packages need to install before installing IBM Installation Manager
  4. Create a non root / admin user wasadmin
  5. Create a folder to install IBM Installation Manager and change permission accordingly
  6. Download the IBM Installation Manager binaries
  7. Extract IBM Installation Manager and Install IBM Installation Manager

Following is step by step process of Installing IBM Installation Manager on Ubuntu 15.04

  1. What is IBM Installation Manager?
    First of all IBM Installation Manager is an installation management tool that installs and maintains Installation Manager-based software packages. IBM Installation Manager comes in the form of an installation kit, which contains a set of Installation Manager installation files and a flat-file repository for the product.
  2. Need of IBM Installation Manager?
    IBM Installation Manager is the Eclipse-based tool that provides you the ability to install and modify packages, search for updates, uninstall, and roll back. Installation Manager makes it easier for you to download and install code for a number of IBM software packages.
    Since IBM WebSphere Application Server Version 8.X we must have IBM Installation Manager to install, update, and uninstall.
  3. Preparing Ubuntu 15.04 for Installing IBM Installation Manager
    1. Installing prerequisites packages.
      We need to install prerequisites packages before installing IBM Installation Manager on Ubuntu 64 bit OS.
      We will be installing IBM Installation Manager on our 64 bit Operating System. If you want to check your operating system architecture check, How to Find Operating System Bit in Ubuntu tutorial.
      Open a terminal by pressing CTRL + ALT + t on your keyboard and run following command

      sudo apt-get install libxtst6 libgtk2.0-0 libc6:i386 libgcc1:i386 libgtk2.0-0:i386 libswt-glx-gtk-3-jni:i386 libswt-gnome-gtk-3-jni:i386 libstdc++6:i386

    2. Change the default shell.
      sudo mv /bin/sh /bin/sh.org
      sudo ln -s /bin/bash /bin/sh
    3. Create a non root user.
      We will be going to use non-root user wasadmin to do the installation of IBM Installation Manager. Log in to the operating system as the root or root equivalent user and open a command line by pressing CTRL + ALT + t
      Run following command to create a user and group named as wasadmin. Not It will ask you for password. Enter the password and hit Enter key. For user information you can skip it by hitting the Enter key.

      sudo adduser wasadmin

    4. Change the open files limit
      We need to set number of open files for our newly created wasadmin user, to do the same first take the backup of limits.conf file

      sudo cp -rip /etc/security/limits.conf /etc/security/limits.conf.orig

      Open the file with your favorite editor

      sudo vi /etc/security/limits.conf

      Add wasadmin soft nofile 10240 before # End of file line.

      In Ubuntu we also need to modify common-session* file. Open the file with your favorite editor

      sudo vi /etc/pam.d/common-session*

      Add session required pam_limits.so at the end of the file.

    5. Create and change permission of a folder for installing IBM Installation Manager
      We will be installing IBM Installation Manager in /app directory, hence run following command to create a directory.

      sudo mkdir /app

      Run the following command to change the owner of the directory to the non-root user which we created earlier.

      sudo chown wasadmin:wasadmin /app

      Run the following command to change permissions for the directory:

      sudo chmod 755 /app

  4. Download IBM Installation Manager
    1. Log in through non root user i.e. wasadmin which we have created earlier. Note that you need IBM Passport Advantage ID and Password to download the IBM Installation Manager. Go to following link to download IBM Installation Manager

    2. Scroll down till Table of contents and click on Versions 1.8.x

    3. Click on Download document of Version 1.8.3 of Installation Manager. It will open another link.

    4. Click on Download package to download the Installation Manager.

    5. Click on FC of Linux

    6. Click on 1.8.3.0-IBMIM-LINUX-X86_64-20150606_0047 as we are going to install it on our Ubuntu 15.04 64 bit OS. If you are not sure about your system architecure follow How to Find Operating System Bit in Ubuntu tutorial.
      Click on Continue button to move ahead

    7. Specify IBM ID and password to download the package.

    8. Check Download using your browser (HTTPS) and click Continue button.

    9. Click on The agent.installer.linux.gtk.x86_64_1.8.3000.20150606_0047.zip to start the download.
      Installing IBM Installation Manager on UbuntuBy default it will get stored in /home/user_name/Downloads folder.
  5. Install IBM Installation Manager
    1. Logging in system using non root user wasadmin which we have created earlier. Open a terminal window by pressing CTRL + ALT + t buttons of your keyboard.
      Change to the location containing the Installation Manager installation files. In our case it is /home/wasadmin/Downloads

      cd ~/Downloads

    2. Unzip the installation binaries to /home/wasadmin/Downloads/IM folder using following command
      unzip agent.installer.linux.gtk.x86_64_1.8.3000.20150606_0047.zip -d IM

    3.  Using your file explorer go to the files extracted location and double click on IM folder.

    4. As we are going to user non admin user for installation double click on userinst to start the installation.

    5. Since Installation Manager is not installed yet, the Installation Manager package is selected by default. The package is ready to install, as the status message indicates. Click Next to proceed.

    6. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement. Click Next.

    7. As we are going to install IBM Installation Manger to /app directory change the path in Installation Manager Directory option. Click on Next button to proceed.

    8. On the Summary page, review the packages. There is only one package that is listed, IBM Installation Manager 1.8.3. Click Install.

    9. A summary of a successful installation is reported with a message indicates that the packages are installed. Press the Restart Installation Manager button to proceed.

    10. That’s it. You will get following screen after you start the IBM Installation Manager.
